Cooking at Home is The Solution to Your Calorie Problem

Calories have become one of the major problem for people these days. With more than seventy percent of the US population facing a growing obesity problem; it has become important for people to consume lesser calories. A cult of people have long been advocating home cooking and discouraging processed food and food from outdoors. Now, science backs them up too.

At the James Beard Food Conference that was held last month, the topic of interest was mostly real and whole home cooked meals and their importance over the processed food available outdoors. In several occasions, bringing back home economics and funding it within every school was discussed so that the children would graduate high school with basic cooking skills. Even Sam Kass, the advisor for White House said that they should find out a way to re-invent home economics.

According to the results from a study by John Hopkins from Bloomberg School of Public Health Research, it was found that the people who cook at home consume lesser calories, carbohydrates, fat and sugar. Even though a pack of lays may contain lesser calories and fat than a banana, but a banana (for example) contains all the necessary fibres and minerals to digest those calories. However, the pack of lays only contains fats, which eventually end up on our belly without being digested. And because the food is not digested, it does not yield any energy, therefore making you feel lethargic.

This is the basic reason why vegetables and meat cooked at home are much healthier than the beef burger that you get at McDonalds. The bun on the burger is full of fat and has no fiber or minerals, while the beef in that is so overly cooked, that it loses much of its nutrition, therefore only becoming junk when it reaches the belly. The mayonnaise and the cheese in the burger are pure chunks of fat as well.

Hence, preparing meals at home from the food from nature, does actually contribute to more energy and lesser fat on the body. According to the study conducted by Hopkins, people who cooked at home have a more healthy diet. Hence, teaching people to cook in the public and private schools will actually contribute to a better future for America. Even when you need to eat out, it is always better to go for the healthier choices. Avoid fast food, soft-drinks and rather go for vegetable, fruit and meat salads. If you find nothing at all around you, you can always get a banana and a pack of milk from the closest mart. You better believe that a banana and a 250 ml pack of milk is enough to get you going for 5-6 hours.

Does Calorie Counting Work for Weight Loss? (Jared D Bannister)

Does calorie counting work for weight loss? When you think of dieting and weight loss, one of the first thoughts that comes to mind is often calorie counting. That is the generally accepted idea that if you eat less and move more (exercise) that you will lose weight. Or if your intake of calories from your diet is less than the number of calories that you burn in your daily activities then you will lose weight.

While this concept is actually fundamentally correct, it fails to cover for some fairly basic biological and psychological concepts. For a start to say that all calories are created equal is somewhat of a myth. If you are accurately measuring the energy released to your body from a unit of food you might say that an apple and a doughnut of equal calorific value will provide your body with the same amount of energy. However as we all know you feel very different after eating an apple than you do after eating a doughnut. This is because an apple will cause a much smaller surge of sugars into your bloodstream which will in turn mean there will be a much smaller release of insulin after eating an apple compared to eating a doughnut.

Following eating the doughnut, excessive insulin release will result in a lowering of blood sugars and also a formation of fat to store the excess energy provided by the large amounts of refined sugar in the doughnut. This has the overall effect of making you feel tired due to the sudden drop ?in blood sugars, in addition you will feel hungry and crave more sugar due to the same reason, and your body will preferentially store more fat.


So while 2 completely different foods may contain the same number of calories, as they will affect your body in very different ways, you can be sure that the overall result will be more likely for weight gain if you eat foods high in sugar compared to natural foods such as fruits, vegetables, lean meats and fish.

What we eat has so much more bearing over whether we will lose weight (and keep it off) than simple calorie counting. If we change what we eat, then we can break food addictions, reduce cravings brought on by excessive sugar intake, switch off our body's tendency to store fat and feel much more satisfied by the food we are eating. By focusing on what we eat rather than how much you will naturally reach a healthy weight without feeling hungry all the time and without the risk of gaining all the weight back after the diet is over.
